Sage

Salvia officinalis

Scent description: Sage essential oil has a pungent herbal, slightly woodsy aroma. It blends well with lavandin, rosemary, and citrus oils.

Uses: Sage essential oil is used to treat bacterial infections, bronchitis, rheumatism, arthritis, sprains, fibrositis and sores. It is also an astringent.

Precautions: Sage should not be used by persons susceptible to epilepsy. It should also not be used during pregnancy, if you have high blood pressure, or for children younger than 5 years of age.

Sandalwood

Santalum album

Scent description: Sandalwood essential oil has a soft, warm woodsy aroma that is uplifting and relaxing. It blends well with lavender, rose, bergamot, geranium, vetiver, patchouli, myrrh and jasmine.

Uses: Sandalwood has sedative properties; it can be used to treat insomnia and anxiety as well as reducing nerve pain. It aids in digestion and increases the production of white blood cells to help fight infection. Sandalwood can also aid in acne treatment.

Spearmint

Mentha spicata

Scent description: Spearmint essential oil has a refreshing mint scent that’s slightly fruity. It blends well with jasmine, lavender, sandalwood and bergamot.

Uses: Spearmint is a calming oil; it can be used to treat indigestion, intestinal cramps, nausea, colic and flatulence. Spearmint essential oil is refreshing and cooling, it’s also energizing to the body and mind. As a facial steam, it’s helpful in cleansing and refining pores. In a bath or massage oil, it’s good for soothing and relaxing tired achy muscles.

Precautions: Spearmint essential oil could possibly cause skin irritation. It should be diluted before use. Do not use on children under the age of 5.

Tangerine

Citrus nobilis

Scent description: Tangerine essential oil has a tangy sweet, citrus scent that’s radiant and fresh. It blends well with bergamot, cinnamon, lavender, lemon, neroli, orange and clary sage.

Uses: Tangerine is a soothing comforting essential oil and can be used to help clear the mind and eliminate emotional confusion. It’s a digestive and lymphatic stimulant as well as a diuretic. Tangerine essential oil also has sedative properties.

Precautions: Tangerine essential oil could possibly cause skin irritation. It should be diluted before use. It’s also phototoxic. Do not expose the skin to sunlight within the first 24 hours after use.

Tea Tree

Melaleuca alternifolia

Scent description: Tea tree essential oil has a medicinal scent that’s somewhat earthy and herbaceous. It blends well with clary sage, geranium, lavender, lemon, nutmeg, rosewood, and rosemary.

Uses: Tea tree oil is an all-purpose antiseptic. It’s effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses. Tea tree essential oil is stimulating to the immune system and increases the production of white blood cells. It can be used to treat urinary tract infections as well as heal acne and diaper rash. Tea tree oil is a useful cleansing agent for the skin and encourages the regeneration of scar tissue.

Thyme

Thymus vulgaris

Scent description: Thyme essential oil has a fresh, herbaceous medicinal scent. It blends well with bergamot, lemon, lavender, marjoram, grapefruit and pine.

Uses: Thyme essential oil is used as a strong antiseptic which increases the production of white blood cells in the body. It’s used to prevent viral or fungal infections. Thyme oil can be used in treatment for arthritis, insect bites, muscle aches, and poor circulation. Thyme is an astringent oil that’s also useful on oily skin

Precautions: Thyme essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy or if you have high blood pressure. Do not use on children under the age of 5.

Valerian

Valeriana officinalis

Scent description: Valerian essential oil has an unpleasant, pungent earthy scent. May blend well with sweet marjoram and roman chamomile.

Uses: Valerian oil has sedative properties. It’s used to treat nervous conditions, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, tension and muscle pain.

Vetiver

Vetiveria zizaniodes

Scent description: Vetiver essential oil has an earthy, smokey aroma. It blends well with jasmine, neroli, orange, patchouli, petitgrain and rose.

Uses: Vetiver oil can be used to heal acne and excessively dry skin as well as dry hair. Vetiver essential oil helps fight bacteria and other infections by increasing eh production of white blood cells in the body. In a massage oil, it’s used to ease muscular pain and stimulates circulation.
