Aromatherapy and Weight Loss

Can aromatherapy really help you lose weight? Some say aromatherapy and weight loss go hand-in-hand, the truth is essential oils will not miraculously make you lose weight. That would be too good to be true!

However, essential oils can assist you in dealing with many of the struggles or difficulties you may face while trying to lose weight. The aroma from certain essential oils can provide that extra help you may need to get over those hurdles.

For example, lavender essential oil links aromatherapy and weight loss. Lavender can help you relax and escape any anxiety or stress that may be a part of your daily routine.

Anxiety and Stress are two of the biggest diet killers. They can cause you to overeat, crave sweets, or drink alcohol, all of which can greatly sabotage your weight loss goals.

But if you put a few drops of lavender essential oil in a diffuser, burn lavender candles, or add a few drops to your bath water, you can curb some of that stress, and fend off the urge to eat or drink the wrong things. Not only does this help physically by keeping you on your diet, but relaxing also helps your emotional well-being.

If you’re not too fond of lavender, you can use jasmine, ylang-ylang or patchouli to get the same results.

There are also some studies that suggest the scent of vanilla essential oils can help reduce the craving for sweets. Burn a vanilla aromatherapy candle and tell that piece of cake to take a hike!

Exercise is a big part of any weight loss plan. Diet alone will cause some weight loss but you can lose much more, and at a more rapid pace, if you incorporate exercise into your plan. But by the time you get off work, grocery shop, feed the kids, clean the house, yada yada yada you’re EXHAUSTED. While some may say that in and of itself is a workout… ummm not so much.

Instead of plopping down on the couch wishing you weren’t so tired, reach for a bottle of juniper essential oil. Add a few drops to a pot of boiling water or a diffuser and let the scent get you going again. Rosewood and rosemary oils will also uplift your tired senses and make you feel more energetic so you can get that workout in.

So the answer to the question “can aromatherapy help you lose weight?”, the answer is… perhaps not directly, but indirectly aromatherapy and weight loss can co-exist to help you reach your goals. But it is just an aid, the real work is up to you.
